BlackBerry OS 5.0 to be released for existing devices starting this week?

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

While the launch of the BlackBerry Storm2 on Verizon is widely expected to take place on October 28th and the Bold 9700 is so close we can almost taste it, owners of current generation BlackBerry smartphones  — the Pearl Flip 8220/8230, Curve 8330/8350i/8900, Bold 9000, Storm 9500/9530 and Tour 9630 — should be pleased to note that RIM is all set for the launch OS 5.0. Specific dates aren’t easily pinned down as it more or less depends on the device one has and the carrier one is with, but thanks to our connects we know, for example, that Verizon will be dropping for the OS 5.0 for the Storm 9530 tomorrow evening with a fall back date set for Monday. Those that don’t have Desktop Manager set up on either their PC or Mac might want to get everything ready ahead of time as it looks for the most part that OTA software updates will not be made available. Oh well. OS 5.0 is oh so worth the hassle.

Vodafone to have Storm2 exclusivity for only “a few weeks”

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

With the BlackBerry Storm2 getting nice and official over night, we here at BGR thought that it would be nice for us to take a moment and focus on just what its launch means for our loyal readers that aren’t living in The New World.  Earlier this week, UK-based The Guardian proclaimed that the Storm2 would be announced by both RIM and Vodafone this week. Clearly this was the case as we now know it will be arriving on or around the 26th of October, but its report missed out on one huge revelation — Vodafone’s exclusivity on the device will only last “a few weeks”. This of course paves the way for other carriers such as O2, Orange and T-Mobile to get in on the Storm action. While all of the aforementioned Storm2 candidate carriers have remained mom mum on the matter, The Guardian is hedging its bets on Orange carrying the Storm2 in time for Christmas. What does this all mean for the UK? Well, when one considers that every major carrier is going to be offering the iPhone 3GS and has the option of picking up the Storm2, it looks as if a major price war is about to erupt in time for the holidays.

BlackBerry Storm2 to be announced this week by Vodafone UK?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

While it’s certainly not much to go on, The Guardian is reporting that the BlackBerry Storm 9520 aka Storm2 will be announced this week by Vodafone UK. Specifics are scarce and it is not entirely clear as to when consumers will actually be able to actually purchase the next-gen Storm, but at the moment we’re more interested in another matter. You see, The Guardian seems to think that Vodafone subs will be able to walk away with a new Storm for free on all tariffs over  £30 ($47.40 USD). Now, whether or not these contracts are for the standard 18 months or painfully long (for the UK) 24 month affair might be an issue for some, but the fact remains that Vodafone seems to be clearly targeting O2 and its much more expensive Palm Pre.

Usually, it’s best to visit a website like www.accessorygeeks.com. You’re looking for a website that has a large selection, so you can get everything you want, and that also has low prices and free shipping. Third, look for accessories that will help you get more enjoyment out of your Blackberry, like a hands-free headset or personal charms or straps.

BlackBerry 8230 Pearl Flip Review

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

You wouldn’t believe the looks I got while using the BlackBerry (NSDQ:RIMM) Pearl Flip at CTIA Wireless. Most were of surprise, others bordered on disgust, others still were closer to curiosity. Even the RIM people gave me weird reactions - “Really? You use that?” Still, I reassured everyone that my regular BlackBerry was a Bold, which was met with many a sigh of relief. One of the some common complaints for the Pearl Flip have been a cheap-feeling construction, the oddly recessed trackball, how the flip jutts out the rear, and overall size, but after using the Pearl Flip from Telus (NYSE: TU) off and on almost since launch, I can say I’m not that disappointed with it. It wouldn’t replace my Bold in a million years, but the 8230 does have a few things going for it. Since the BlackBerry 8230 just came out on Alltel and we’re expecting it on Verizon (NYSE: VZ) soon, we thought it might be worth checking out.

Useful Blackberry Accessories

If you own a Blackberry cell phone, there are a number of ways in which you can accessorize it so that it remains in good condition. Adhesive screen covers which do not impair legibility can be purchased, and these are important for preventing scratches, so that you can easily read emails and other text message content on your screen. A case made of silicon or another material can also keep the rest of your device free of scratches, and is a good idea if you would like to keep the resale value of your phone high.

Indispensible Blackberry Accessories

You can also find indispensible Blackberry accessories such as OEM chargers and batteries online. If your battery is no longer holding a charge, you can simply replace it with a brand new battery bought at a discounted price online. Accessories can be found for recent as well as older models of Blackberries, including wireless headsets, data expansion cards, and much more.

7digital to Offer DRM-Free Music to BlackBerry this Summer

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

DevelopIQ is getting in on the mobile music scene in a serious way at WES 2009 with 7digital. With a number of music licenses comparable to Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), 7digital will offer DRM-free music downloaded over the air to BlackBerrys this summer. That alone is pretty sweet, but 7digital’s massive license library has attracted the attention of other players in the BlackBerry(NSDQ:RIMM) music sphere, and they’re working towards populating those other apps with their music library.

7digital’s app, though, is the slickest I’ve seen to date. It has two panes on the left and right that are summoned either by temporarily reprogrammed convenience keys, or by quick scrollball swipes. Gestures FTW. Beyond that, you can plug right into your BlackBerry Remote Stereo Gateway from the app and have all the same native music controls

Automatic syncing over Wi-Fi means no plugs, and you’ve got options when it comes to quality: over the cell network, they’ll send you a low-fidelity version which will automatically be replaced with the super-awesome one once you’re within Wi-Fi. I’m really looking forward to this app, especially if they can get it rolling in Canada as quickly after their U.S. and U.K as they say.

New App Brings Mobile TV to BlackBerries

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

A new application from QuickPlay Media called PrimeTime2Go will let BlackBerry users download and play TV programming on their handsets. PrimeTime2Go offers full-length shows from a wide variety of TV channels, some of which include: Lost, The Office, Top Chef and Monk. This application requires a monthly service fee of $8. TV programs are downloaded via Wi-Fi, or in the background via the cellular network. The programs will have a pre-determined shelf life on the handheld before they expire. Until that time/date is reached, the show may be played back as many times as the user wishes. The app is available in BlackBerry Apps World. A PayPal account is required.
