T-Mobile - All your Sidekick data are belong to … well, no one … it’s gone!

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Cellphone service provider T-Mobile is owning up to what could be one of the biggest cloud-computing disasters so far.

While T-Mobile is working to recover some of the data, customers are being advised on what to do to prevent them losing their data.

There’s also information on rebuilding contacts data:

  • Your Sidekick is capable of importing contacts saved in vCard format. A vCard is like an electronic business card often found attached to e-mail messages, but can be exchanged in other ways. They can contain name and address information, phone numbers, URLs, logos, photographs, and even audio clips.
  • If you have contacts in Vcard format, you can e-mail, text, mms, or Bluetooth those contacts to your device. Once received, you can click “Import” on the Vcard and it will be added to your address book.
  • Many popular Personal Information Manager (PIM) applications such as Microsoft Outlook can export address book information into vCard format. If you use one of these applications on your computer you may be able to export the address book entries and e-mail them to your @tmail.com address.
  • If you have e-mail accounts with gmail, yahoo, or AIM you can use their ‘export contacts’ function to convert and send the contacts to your @tmail.com address in vCard format.

T-Mobile BlackBerry 9700 launching November 11th?

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Look, we’ll be completely upfront like we always are: this is not confirmed. Since that’s out of the way, one of our new connects (whom we have reason to trust) has informed us that T-Mobile USA is gearing up to launch the BlackBerry 9700 on November 11th. Engadget’s announcement dates make sense, as does this launch date. If it all pans out you’ll be hearing about the BlackBerry 9700 for AT&T and T-Mobile come October 21st, and on November 11th, you’ll be able to mosey on down to your local T-Mobile shop and actually buy one for yourself. Or you can wait until you win a whole heap of them from BGR. Huh? We didn’t say anything…

King of the QWERTYs: T-Mobile Dash 3G

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

We posted the first of three parts of the King of the QWERTYs feature with the BlackBerry Tour and now are moving on to take a look at the T-Mobile Dash 3G. You can check out my earlier review for some other thoughts on the device since this feature will look at a few specific categories across all three forward facing QWERTY devices and won’t cover the device in detail. The three selected devices are the RIM BlackBerry Tour, T-Mobile Dash 3G, and Nokia E71x. You can check out a few photos of these three in this image gallery.

Microsoft smartphones began a few years ago with non-touchscreen candy bar form factor devices that had a slightly different flavor of the OS compared to the Pocket PC OS. These smartphones were highly focused on phone calls, with data as a secondary need. We then saw more touchscreen Pocket PC phones launch alongside these non-touchscreen smartphones and over the last couple of years the trend in the Windows Mobile world has been on optimizing the touch experience. The T-Mobile Dash/HTC Excalibur was an extremely popular form factor and device across the spectrum of users. I know several serious mobile phone enthusiasts, who have access to just about every device available, that swear by the Dash and were very disappointed to see no apparent follow-up over the last two years.

I think all of these people, including myself, breathed a sigh of relief when we saw HTC announce the HTC Snap/T-Mobile Dash 3G device last month. The T-Mobile Dash was successful because of its form factor, battery life, optimized phone experience (smart dialing) and stability and I am pleased to see the T-Mobile Dash 3G improves on just about every area of the Dash, except for the display resolution. It turns out the display resolution (240×320 pixels) is a current limit in the Windows Mobile Standard OS so there is nothing else HTC could have done with the Dash 3G/Snap in this area.

Costco customers can buy the T-Mobile Dash 3G for only $89.99

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

I posted my review of the T-Mobile Dash 3G back on 30 June. The Dash 3G can now be purchased from T-Mobile and as you can see on the T-Mobile site the full price is $349.99 and there is a $180 instant discount for new lines of service. A reader, Nicole, sent me a note that there is a Costco coupon that runs from Monday, 13 July to 2 August, where new customers can save even more and even existing customers may get a great deal.

According to the Costco coupon (I took a picture of the one I have at home) there is a $210 instant savings for new 2-year activations or customers with eligible upgrades. That would bring your Dash 3G price down to $139.99. Then there is another $50 mail-in rebate for those that sign up for the $24.99/month unlimited data plan. This means that new customers can pick up the T-Mobile Dash 3G for only $89.99 from Costco, compared to $169.99 from T-Mobile. Existing customers, with eligible upgrades (not sure exactly what this means), can pick up the Dash 3G for a decent price of $139.99.

If you are an existing customer then I recommend you try to find a Costco with the Dash 3G since that looks like the only place you may qualify for any type of discounted price from the $349.99 suggested retail price of the Dash 3G. If I didn’t just move my whole family to AT&T I would be at Costco on Monday when this sale kicks off.

T-Mobile to Launch New Google Phone in August

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

T-Mobile will begin selling the myTouch 3G, its new “Google phone,” in August — facing off against high-end devices such as the Apple iPhone 3G S and Palm Pre.

The No. 4 U.S. carrier said, myTouch 3G is a slimmer, more advanced version of the G1, the first phone that used Google’s Android software.

The new phone looks similar to the iPhone and has many of the same features, including a similarly sized touch screen.

It features a built-in 3.2-megapixel camera, music player and video capabilities to share photos and videos on sites like YouTube and Picasa.

The smartphone can also be personalized with custom home screens, widgets and can also learn user preferences and offer recommendations.

Google’s Android software lets users connect to corporate email servers.

“We believe a lot of this market will come from people who are moving into the smartphone space for the first time,” said Cole Brodman, T-Mobile’s chief technology officer. “G1 buyers were much more of a tech-enthusiast, early adopter-type crowd.”

Apple unveiled its latest iPhone, the 3G S, last Friday with new features and faster speeds, intensifying competition in the high-end smartphone market. Apple and AT&T also slashed the price of the older iPhone model.

The T-Mobile myTouch 3G is available for pre-order from July 8 onwards and costs $199 with a two-year contract. It comes in white, black and wine red colors.

How would you change T-Mobile’s Sidekick LX 2009?

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

T-Mobile’s Sidekick LX 2009 represented a huge leap forward in the hiptop sector. Not only was the swiveling motion as smooth as ever here, but this was the first Sidekick that seemed to really take its user interface seriously. To that end, we’re interested in knowing how you — the opinionated consumer — feel about Danger’s latest effort. Are you impressed by the grown-up features? Does the form factor still have a place in your life? Is the UI snappy enough? Do you still get enough stares from potential mates when you whip it out on the subway? The floor’s yours, make it good.

T-Mobile Launching Dash 3G Smartphone in July

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

T-Mobile has announced the Dash 3G is coming in July, packing Windows Mobile 6.1, Wi-Fi, GPS, and 3G mobile connectivity.

T-Mobile has announced it will be launching its the Dash 3G smartphone beginning in July, following up on the company’s popular Dash offering. The Dash 3G—built by HTC and otherwise known as the HTC Snap—sports a full QWERTY keyboard with trackball, sports Wi-Fi and mobile 3G connectivity, offers an integrated GPS, and runs Windows Mobile 6.1 so users can tie in to Outlook, Exchange, and all sort of other enterprise goodies from the Microsoft universe.

“T-Mobile is offering our first 3G-enabled Windows Mobile smartphone to help customers stay connected, organized, and traveling in the right direction,” said T-Mobile’s director of product marketing Travis Warren, in a statement. “We’re excited to offer the power and style of the T-Mobile Dash 3G with high-speed Internet access thanks to T-Mobile’s rapidly expanding 3G network.”

Although T-Mobile is touting the pending availability of the Dash 3G, it has yet to release pricing or service details: we assume T-Mobile will be looping the Dash with T-Mobile services offerings like myFaves, but no details are available.

T-Mobile, the fourth-largest U.S. mobile carrier, claims that its network now offers 3G service to more than 200 million people by the end of the year, up from 100 million or so at the end of 2008.

June is going to be a rich month, in terms of smartphones. The HTC Touch Pro 2 might join the iPhone Gen 3 and the Palm Pre in the launch parade of the summer. In the UK, the June launch is now a quasi-certainty as retailers are displayingan expected release date of June 12

We know that T-Mobile is getting the HTC Touch Pro, thanks to a leaked ROM . However, the question is: is it T-Mobile Germany or T-Mobile USA? some think that both should get it, but at this point, this is just rumors and speculations.

BlackBerry Curve 8520 confirmed for T-Mobile USA?

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

There’s still nothing official about the BlackBerry Curve 8520 , but we’re hearing that the new RIM smartphone will be released by T-Mobile USA sometime in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The source of this rumor, BGR , says that a price for the 8520 was not given, but it should be on the affordable side anyway.

Well, a low price point won’t be a surprise given the features of the new smartphone, which include a QVGA display, Wi-Fi, a 2MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0 and quad-band GSM connectivity with EDGE.

The BlackBerry Curve 8520 also has dedicated music keys and a new optical trackball which, apparently, is just plain awesome.

Bring it on, T-Mobile!

Sony Ericsson CS8 8.1MP Camera Phone to Launch for T-Mobile

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

The Federal Communications Commission approved the Sony Ericsson CS8, an 8.1-megapixel camera phone heading to T-Mobile in the coming months.

Sony Ericsson, a joint venture between Japan’s Sony and Sweden’s Ericsson, filed the CS8 for regulatory approval — a necessary step to bring the device to the United States.

The documents confirms that the quad-band phone supports T-Mobile’s new 3G HSDPA network, Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS with Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions and Bluetooth capabilities.

The handset’s back plate prominently displays T-Mobile’s ‘myFaves’ logo, indicating the carrier’s eventual launch.
