Motorola DROID finally official, coming November 6th for $199

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Being the only people on the planet with a Motorola Droid not under armed guard was one hell of a ride, but come November 6th we’re going to have a lot of company as that’s the day Verizon Wireless will be selling the Motorola Droid. To go for $199.99 on a 2-year deal, the DROID is one hell of a steal considering that its specs include a 3.7″ WVGA capacitive display, sliding QWERTY keypad, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash, 720×480 video capture at 24 fps, GPS (the DROID is the first device to feature Google Maps Navigation which provides free turn-by-turn voice navigation), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Exchange support, 6.4 hours of talk time and a pre-installed 16GB memory card — all running on top of Android 2.0. Not enough? Yes, ladies and gentlemen: Motorola is back. Hit the jump for the press release and a couple high-res pics.

Motorola Sholes passes the FCC with EV-DO and Wi-Fi on board

Monday, September 28th, 2009

If you’re a Verizon fan and a lover of all things Android, you were probably pretty upset earlier this month when Motorola’s Android event came and went with nary a peep about the Sholes. Don’t fret however, as relief is seemingly on the way soon enough — Motorola’s imminent second Android phone has just passed through the FCC. Pics, diagrams, manuals and pretty much all of the other goodies we typically see in an FCC filing have been withheld at the behest of Motorola (and presumably Verizon) but it’s not as if we don’t already know exactly what were dealing with here. As for when we can expect to see the Sholes hit store shelves across the nation, the latest rumor has it coming sometime next month just in time to show Sprint and its chinless Hero who the nation’s largest wireless carrier is. So what say you Android fans — Hero or Sholes?

More Motorola Android rumors afoot: Shules will run Éclair at launch; AT&T will get GSM version; Flash on track for 2010

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

A new wave of rumors surrounding Motorola and two of its first Android-powered devices is making the rounds this afternoon and if even a few tidbits pan out, it could mean big things coming from the down and out manufacturer. The focus is clearly on the Shules, or Sholes depending on who your source is, and the Flash makes a brief appearance as well for good measure. Let’s get to it:

  • The Shules will launch with Eclair — Donut is so H1 2009, and Motorola’s upcoming Android slider will reportedly drop with Eclair on board. It may even be the “flagship” Eclair handset intended to showcase all of the new features Android will have obtained with Eclair’s release.
  • The Shules will be a gaming beast — The handset is optimized for ARMv7 architecture and will be able to gobble up 3D graphics and games like none other. Supposedly.
  • There is a GSM version of the Shules in the works — While Verizon will get the CDMA version of the Motorola Shules this year as an exclusive, there is already a GSM version in the pipeline and it should land on AT&T, or T-Mobile, some time in 2010.
  • The Flash is still on track — One of the many handsets we scooped last year, the Flash, is still said to be making its way to Verizon and it should launch in early 2010. This further supports what we speculated earlier this month.

While absolutely none of this new info is confirmed by any means, a lot of it certainly makes sense. Slap some Blur goodness on top of this Android pie and you might just end up with the first Motorola smartphones in ages that are actually worth getting excited about.

You want more Motorola Shules? We’ll give you more Motorola Shules

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

We’ve been sitting on the Shules for a few months now but since renders / details and a live pic of the upcoming Moto have already been leaked, our ninja gave us the green light. Behold… Shules (no, of course that won’t be the launch name). As for additional details, first and foremost we’re told that this handset is not the Calgary we scooped exclusively last year. It’s a different handset entirely and the Calgary is still in development from what we understand. It’s also not a QWERTY retooling of the Flash, which some have speculated. Our guess is the Flash will still drop on Verizon sometime next year, just as the myTouch 3G is a full touchscreen follow up to the QWERTY-sporting G1; that’s just speculation, however. Also bear in mind that these pictures — including the one leaked yesterday — are old. This handset is a prototype and we’re hoping it has been refined a bit since these shots were taken. Of course, we’d be plenty happy to take this sexy 3.7-inch touchscreen-rocking Android phone as-is but we’d love to see the production model come a tiny bit closer to the renders. Hit the jump for a bigger version of the image above along with a couple more shots.

Staying Legal With a Motorola Bluetooth

Many states now have laws on the books that make it illegal to drive while talking on your cell phone – unless you have a hands-free headset. This is why buying something like a Motorola Bluetooth makes more sense than ever. It allows you to not only be in compliance with the law, but to drive more safely and to be able to concentrate on the road. Even if your particular city or state doesn’t currently have a similar law on the books, it’s likely that they will soon, and as soon as they do, you’re likely to see the costs of these headsets spike.

Finding the Right Motorola Bluetooth

When you decide to start shopping for a Motorola Bluetooth, you’ll have a few options to choose from. The best idea to find the right one for you is to visit a website like www.accessorygeeks.com that has plenty of choices. That way, you’ll be able to compare the options side by side and come up with the option that will work best for you. There are advantages to different types of headsets and instead of having to scour the Internet to learn about them all, you can simply find them all at one site.

Moto says hello to the ROKR ZN50

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

It might not be the most exciting new handset to come to light this year, or this month, or even today… But Moto has just added a new piece to the ROKR puzzle this morning. Say hola to the Moto ROKR ZN50. For the time being it looks like this puppy will be confined to South Korea but availability in other markets is likely at some point down the road. As far as music phones go, it’s not terrible:

  • WCDMA 2100/HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900
  • Dimensions: 108.9mm x 54mm x 14.3mm
  • Weight: 143g
  • Display: widescreen touch-sensitive 3.2-inch, TFT, 240×427 pixels resolution, 262k colors
  • Camera: 3.2 megapixels with auto-focus
  • Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR
  • “SRS WOW HD” sound system
  • GPS
  • microSDHC support
  • Battery: 900 mAh
  • Other applications: Alarm clock, calendar, calculator, units converter, world time

At the right price and in the right markets, we can see the ROKR ZN50 shining to some extent. Rumor suggests it will drop near the end of the year and will come with free access to a music download service of some kind.
