Videos and details reveal features of the Nokia N900 Internet Tablet

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

As readers here may know, I am the editor of  Nokia Experts and currently have a pre-production Nokia N900 Internet Tablet to evaluate until January. This Maemo 5-powered Internet Tablet is quite an improvement over previous Nokia Internet Tablets that never seemed to take off with an integrated cellular data connection and much better native software provided by Nokia. Since this is a pre-production device and not necessarily focused on the enterprise market I have been making most of my posts about the device on my Nokia Experts site.

I think some of you readers may still be interested in this Linux device and wanted to let you know about several videos and posts I made today as I try to cover all aspects of the device for those thinking about purchasing it when it is released. You can check out my videos and thoughts as they pertain to:

  • General walk around
  • Phone functionality
  • Web browser performance
  • PIM capability
  • Camera and media player
  • Steam music wirelessly via the web browser
  • Tether your N900 with a Windows PC

As you can see the Nokia N900 is a very capable device, even with this early software build currently loaded on it. I plan to post many more videos and thoughts on other areas of the device so stay tuned for more coverage. Please do let me know if you have any questions on the N900 and I will try to answer those as well. I am working on a post related to the N900 and enterprise usage for posting here.

Telefónica to offer Nokia Messaging in its Latin American markets

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

And Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has another partner for its Nokia Messaging scheme. It’s the Spanish group Telefónica, which will offer the Finnish giant’s email service to its customers across Latin America.

I’m guessing some special plans will be introduced along with the new service, although there are no details about it in the press release. It [press release], however, repeats what’s Nokia Messaging all about, for those who haven’t followed Nokia’s activities closely (or IntoMobile for that matter):

Finally, at the end, Nokia reminds us that Nokia Messaging works best with their QWERTY keyboard-equipped smartphones, which is only natural, right?

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic gets official for T-Mobile; $29.99 after rebate

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

T-Mobile subscribers have a pretty solid new option today in the form of an affordable music-centric handset from Nokia. The latest addition to our Finnish friends’ XpressMusic line, the 5130 XM is an S40 feature phone with tween written all over it. Spec highlights include a music player with dedicated external controls, FM radio, a 2 megapixel camera with video capture, stereo Bluetooth and microSD expansion. No, it won’t be knocking any socks off but as far as budget feature phones go, this little guy is a scrapper. Nokia’s 5130 XpressMusic is available immediately in two color combinations — black/red and pear white/aqua. On a 2-year contract, it’ll run you $29.99 after a $20 mail-in rebate in stores and online.

Verizon announces the Nokia 7705 Twist

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

No, it’s not quite as exciting as the Touch Pro2 of course, but Verizon has just announced another addition to its ever-expanding portfolio in the Nokia 7705 Twist. To say the Twist is a polarizing handset is an understatement of immense proportions — the messaging phone features a form factor that is pretty much unlike anything we’ve seen before. As you can see above, the chubby square form rotates open on its bottom right corner to reveal a full QWERTY keypad. Is the Twist a niche phone? Most definitely. Tweens looking for a messaging phone that will stand out from the crowd will surely find it appealing however, and the decent price point will definitely make it attainable. The Nokia 7705 Twist goes on sale online this Sunday September 13th for $99 after a $50 mail-in rebate on a 2-year contract. VZW stores will then offer it a week later on Monday September 21st. Hit the jump for spec highlights.

Nokia Mural announced for AT&T

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

It’s not quite as intriguing as any of the devices featured at Nokia World this morning, but Nokia and AT&T have just announced a new entry level S40 flip phone dubbed the Nokia Mural. Bearing a striking resemblance to Motorola W series phones of old, the Mural is a clam shell feature phone that would make 2002 proud. Spec highlights include 3G with HSDPA connectivity, integrated IM and email, dedicated external music buttons, a 2.2-inch QVGA internal display, a 2 megapixel camera and microSDHC support. It also sports a variety of customizable lighting features sure to prevent it from finding its way into the hands of anyone over 14 years of age. AT&T’s Nokia Mural will hit store shelves this coming Sunday, September 6th, and it will cost $49.99 after mail-in rebate on a 2-year contract.

Nokia Accessories for the Latest Models

If you own a Nokia cell phone which is a recent model, it is probable that your device will have a micro SD card slot which can take various makes of SD card. Nokia accessories such as SD cards and protective cases which are designed to fit various models can be obtained online via cell phone accessory suppliers, along with the right chargers for different models. Because the latest Nokia phones have much larger screens, it is wise to also purchase a screen cover which will help to protect against scratches.

Nokia Accessories for Older Devices

If you purchase a Nokia second-hand, or are still using your old discontinued model, you can find Nokia accessories for these older devices online as well, and it is probable if you have been using a phone for a while that you will need to replace the battery at some point. You can buy both OEM and generic batteries for a variety of models online, as well as compatible chargers, headsets, and cables for connecting your phone to your laptop or computer.

New Nokia 5800 XM firmware to make wishlist a reality; kinectic scrolling, Improved camera and more

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

We have to be perfectly honest with you — it’s been a long time since any of us bothered to play with our Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. A really long time. The handset was a bit dated before it even came to market and it has been a tiny bit difficult to keep caring about it. It’s definitely a milestone device though — Nokia’s first S60 5th Edition phone and a sign that that company is in fact trying to keep up with the times, to some extent — so we feel obligated to cover it once in a while. Like now: Nokia Malaysia reportedly held a meet and greet recently at which several tasty tidbits regarding the 5800 XM were revealed. Long story short, a bunch of the neat little features found in the 5530 XM are supposedly headed to the 5800 XM in a new firmware update due out some time in the future. Notables:

  • Kinetic scrolling
  • Improved camera performance
  • Enhanced home screen (like the N97)
  • Improved response time

So if you’re still enjoying your 5800 XM but you’ve been waiting for these improvements to make your life whole again, hopefully this rumor will pan out sooner rather than later.

Nokia makes 3720 official, its “most rugged mobile handset to date”

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Nokia’s not exactly known for its beefy, ultra-survivable gear, but unless the human race plans on getting a whole lot less clumsy, rugged phones will always be a good idea — and Espoo’s 3720 certainly seems to fill the bill. The Series 40-based candybar features a 2 megapixel cam with LED flash, triband EDGE (sorry, North Americans), FM radio, microSD expansion, and the latest and greatest Bluetooth 2.1, but the real news here is that the phone is built to meet IP54 standards. A quick check with our handy-dandy IP code reference tells us that means that “ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment; complete protection against contact” — in other words, your phone might get nasty dirty, but it’ll keep chugging — and it can withstand “splashing” water. Scuba divers, the search for your perfect phone probably continues. Refreshingly, the 3720 will run just €125 (about $175) unlocked when it ships later this summer.

Add-on Nokia Accessories

There are many add-on devices which can be purchased for Nokia cell phones, from portable speakers to portable fold-up keyboards which can be used for typing out emails and text messages, making memos and browsing the internet with greater ease. Those who own Nokia handsets which double up as music-players can purchase various different types of headphones, such as wireless headphones as well as special accessories which are designed for active types who exercise and use their cell phones to play back music while they do so.

Nokia Accessories for Device Protection

If you own a Nokia cell phone which has a large screen, it is especially important to obtain some sort of device protection which will prevent scratches. Clear, adhesive screen guards which are non-static can be purchased via cell phone accessory suppliers, as can cell phone covers which can be used to protect the rest of your device from scuff marks and scratches, which could hurt the value of your phone if you ever wish to sell it in order to upgrade.
